Fellowship offered for Taiwan filmmakers to train in LA

The Taiwan Academy in Los Angeles is working with Film Independent to launch the "Taiwan Academy Fellowship" grant to help aspiring Taiwanese filmmakers embark on a week-long training program in California. Applications are now open until July 1.

The Taiwanese filmmaker or filmmaking team that is selected will join Film Independent's "Producing Lab" on identifying creative and logistic needs to develop their projects. The mission of the fellowship is to assist aspiring Taiwanese filmmakers gain international exposure and connect Taiwan's film industry with its overseas counterparts.

"Producing Lab" is an intensive, week-long program that will take place from Oct. 4 through 9 in Los Angeles. Professional filmmakers will be present to advise on the technological and financial aspects of independent filmmaking. Additionally, an established creative advisor will provide one-on-one guidance on refining the proposed project over the course of the program.

The lab will culminate in a one-day final presentation, which will help increase the proposed project's visibility in the US film industry. Senior industry executives will also share their experiences and advice with the fellowship recipient.

As an American non-profit organization, Film Independent provides labs for selected writers, producers and filmmakers while offering year-round networking opportunities. This fellowship aims to support filmmakers in developing a project strategy and its execution plan, with additional pitching opportunities to further accelerate the completion of the project.

Scope of fellowship shall include:

  • Stipend of US$10,000
  • Week-long training with "Producing Lab"

Application requirements include:

  • The applicant(s) must be a Taiwanese filmmaker (or a filmmaking team) based in Taiwan with a high degree of English-language proficiency.
  • The proposal must include a feature-length narrative project that is already in active development or pre-production, with a completed script and an attached director.
  • If the awarded recipient is a filmmaking team with more than one filmmaker, the fellowship stipend will be equally distributed.
  • Documentary, short film, new media, and episodic projects are not eligible for this fellowship.
