Taiwanese artist to join Brooklyn-based virtual open studio

Taiwanese artist Chen Liang-hsuan (陳亮璇) has been invited to join this year's virtual DUMBO Open Studios. Please join us from June 4 through 7 to view her works and those of fellow featured artists.

In April each year, the Brooklyn-based program opens its doors to the public as a public outreach program to give visitors a look into studios and workspaces across the Brooklyn waterfront. Now rendered impossible by the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, the Open Studios will be launched instead as a virtual showcase for DUMBO artists and galleries. For the first time, this program will also showcase artworks that will be directly available for sale to support their artists during these precarious times.

Born in Taipei in 1985, Chen is a Taiwanese video artist whose practice applies images on narratives and sounds, creating spatial installations that seek to connect together different time segments. Her approach of mixing experimental documentary and home videos result in hyper-real states that blend together everyday life and personal memories that are uniquely Taiwanese.

Chen was in a residency program hosted by the Triangle Arts Association and DUMBO until all operations were put on hold by the pandemic. The association has since been reaching out to its alumni, who are sharing stories of their art and lives from around the world. Check out these interviews and a short video essay by her.

All professional visual artists living and working in DUMBO and Vinegar Hill are welcome to participate, as well as neighborhood galleries. To be included in the DUMBO Open Studios online edition, please share basic information with the organizers here, including name, address, contact information, and artwork images.
