Taiwanese films shortlisted for Toronto International Film Festival

The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) unveiled the official lineup for its 46th edition, set to take place from Sep. 9 to 18. Two Taiwanese films are being shortlisted at this year’s festival, with "Terrorizers (青春弒戀)" by director Ho Wi-ding (何蔚庭) in the Contemporary World Cinema section and "The Falls (瀑布)" by director Chung Mong-hong (鍾孟宏) in the Special Presentations section.

This is Ho's second time to enter this film festival after winning TIFF's first prize of the Platform Competition with "Cities of Last Things(幸福城市)" in 2018.

"Terrorizers" is a suspense film, telling the story of six characters who appear unrelated but connected through a case for murder. The film explores the living environment of Generation Z, born between the late 1990s and the early 2010s, surrounded by virtual reality, online games, influencers, public opinion, family issues.

In addition, "The Falls" is Chung's first work to observe the society from the perspective of a female protagonist. The film describes a mother and daughter’s fraught relationship that takes unexpected turns while they quarantine during the pandemic, aiming at urging audiences to discover love in daily life.

"Terrorizers" is slated for release at the end of the year, and the release date for "The Falls" will be dependent on the pandemic situation.

TIFF is a not-for-profit cultural organization whose mission is to transform the way people see the world through film. Last year, it was held virtually due to the pandemic and is returning in 2021 with in-person screenings, as well as digital and outdoor premieres. This year's festival features over 100 films, special events, talks, tributes, and interactive experiences.
