Taiwanese director Tsai Ming-liang's latest film set to return to U.S. theater

"Days (日子)," the latest feature by Taiwan-based Malaysian director Tsai Ming-liang (蔡明亮) and an official selection of the 58th New York Film Festival, will return to Film at Lincoln Center (FLC)’s Francesca Beale Theater and Walter Reade Theater on August 13.

Featuring Taiwanese actor Lee Kang-sheng (李康生), "Days" depicts a story of a middle-aged man, who suffers from loneliness and physical ailment.

The film, which was selected for the core category of the 58th New York Film Festival (NYFF), had its North American premiere at a drive-in theater followed by virtual cinema screenings due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

FLC, the organizer of the NYFF, has decided to "bring back much of the NYFF58 lineup to be screened and seen as these films were meant to be," and "Days" will be part of this special series of encore and in-person screenings of 33 titles from NYFF58.

The film was highly praised last fall at the NYFF, and FLC noted that "Days" is a work of longing, constructed with the director’s customary brilliance at visual composition and shot through with profound empathy.

As the most celebrated figure of the second New Wave of Taiwanese cinema, Tsai graduated from the Drama and Cinema Department of the Chinese Culture University in Taipei in 1982. He has represented Taiwan on the world stage with his distinctive film aesthetics. As a master in the realm of slow cinema, Tsai has won numerous accolades, including the Golden Lion and the Fipresci Prize, at international film festivals.
