TCC in New York collaborates with NY Asian film fest to present Taiwanese horror films

As part of its 30th anniversary program, Taipei Cultural Center (TCC) in New York collaborates with the New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF) to present a ten-day virtual series of horror films in celebration of Taiwan's Ghost Month, from Aug 23 through Sep. 1.

Titled "Taiwan Ghost Month," the series showcases a constellation of domestic box-office hits from recent years that have been critically praised for incorporating Taiwanese folklore, Chinese mythology, contemporary social issues, and historical tragedies into their succinctly unnerving narratives.

The seven films in the series are "Detention (返校)," an official selection of NYAFF 2020 directed by John Hsu (徐漢強); "Get the Hell Out (逃出立法院)" directed by Wang I-Fan (王逸帆); "The Heirloom(宅變)" directed by Leste Chen(陳正道); "Mon Mon Mon Monsters(報告老師!怪怪怪怪物)" directed by Giddens Ko (柯景騰); "The Rope Curse (粽邪)" directed by Liao Shih-Han (廖士涵); "Silk (詭絲)" directed by Su Chao-Bin (苏照彬); and "The Tag-Along (紅衣小女孩)" directed by Cheng Wei-hao (程伟豪).

NYAFF Executive Director Samuel Jamier stated that Asian movies have helped forge the gold standard of horror. Japan, Thailand, South Korea and Hong Kong boast some of the most frightening films in the history of world cinema.

He added, "While Taiwan seems to have flown under the radar, its horror films, with their pervasively sinister atmospherics, not to mention a singular vision of vengeful ghosts, have proven to be a major force to be reckoned with in the past few years."
