Five classic wuxia films to be screened at Metrograph Theater in New York

A variety of classic Taiwanese wuxia films will be screened at New York City's Metrograph Theater starting from Jan. 3, 2022.

The films include "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (臥虎藏龍)" by director Ang Lee (李安); "Executioners from Shaolin (洪熙官)" by director Lau Kar-leung (劉家良); as well as "Dragon Inn (龍門客棧)," "A Touch of Zen (俠女)," and "Raining in the mountain (空山靈雨)," directed by the late martial arts director King Hu (胡金銓).

Director Lee's "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" was the first Chinese-language film to win the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film, receiving four awards in total at the 2001 Oscars.

All three of director Hu's digitally restored films have also received additional global recognition in recent years. "Dragon Inn" and "A Touch of Zen" were selected for Cannes Classics. Moreover, "Raining in the Mountain" was selected for the first edition of Classici fuori Mostra, organized by the Venice Biennale in 2018. Hu's style influenced decades of subsequent Asian cinema, including director Tsui Hark's (徐克) "New Dragon Gate Inn (新龍門客棧)," director Tsai Ming-liang's (蔡明亮) "Goodbye, Dragon Inn (不散)," and director Lee's "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon."

The Metrograph is an independent two-screen movie theater that specializes in showing art films and independent films. Previously, the theater had screened works by Tsai Ming-liang, Sylvia Chang (張艾嘉), Johnnie To (杜琪峯), Kaige Chen (陳凱歌), Maggie Chang (張曼玉), and others.
