Taiwanese new media artist Huang Hsin-chien (黃心健) will present his solo exhibition titled "The Data We Called Home" at the Pratt Manhattan Gallery in New York for the first time from Sep. 23, 2022 to Feb. 28, 2023.
In his first US solo show, Huang explores spiritual, political, and literary themes in four virtual reality films, sculptures, and videos. Curated by Linda Lauro-Lazin, an assistant chairperson of digital arts at Pratt Institute, the exhibition will showcase Huang's VR projects that win numerous awards, including "Samsara (輪迴)," "Bodyless (失身記)," "To the Moon (登月)," "Through the Body (穿越身體)," and more. In addition, his stainless steel sculpture "Yun Kong (蘊空)," which consists of three pieces－"The Barricade," "The Bunker," and "The Monument"－will be another highlight of the exhibition. The series is an example to show the fusion between metaverse and reality.
On Sep. 22, a discussion and opening reception will be held in advance of the exhibition public opening. Pratt Gallery artistic director Nicholas Battis will be the host and Huang will talk about his creation and the trend of Taiwan's new media art.
Born in 1966, Huang Hsin-chien is a new media creator with backgrounds in art, design, engineer, and electronic gaming. His career endeavor explores the possibilities of cutting-edge technologies in art, literature, design, and stage performance. His projects involve large-scale interdisciplinary interaction, performing, mechanical apparatus, algorithmic computations, and video installations.
