A total of 28 art pieces by Taiwanese craftsmen of different generations will be displayed at an exhibition under the theme of "Green Talk—Taiwan Craft So Well" at Twin Oaks Estate in Washington D.C. from Oct. 5, 2022, to Jan. 31, 2023.
The exhibition seeks to convey the image of Taiwan's distinctive craft culture and the essential value of Taiwan Green Crafts including "naturalness," "circulation," "balance," "tolerance," and "vitality." Through this exhibition, it hopes to pass on the spirit and values of Taiwan's craftsmanship and extend the hand of friendship to all cultures.
Under the theme of "Green Talk,” the exhibition aims to spark conversations revolving around three aspects including nature, spirit, and society. The dialogue on nature is about the diversity of natural materials used in Taiwan's crafts, and the rich natural resources available for craft creation. For example, undergoing international co-creation utilizing the local betel nut sheath, using domestic timber in response to the carbon rights issue, and more.
Daily craftsmanship is another focus of the exhibition, emphasizing the "persistence and concentration" and "work ethics" of Taiwanese crafts. Representative works that will be on display include bamboo weaving which requires a high level of discipline, copper vessels that go through repeatedly hammering, and lacquerwares that require perseverance during the layering process.
In addition to the exhibition at Twin Oaks, the National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute will also exhibit 17 other Taiwanese craft creations at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center from Oct. 12 to 14, allowing more Americans to see the beauty of Taiwan's exquisite craftsmanship.
"Green Talk—Taiwan Craft So Well" highlights the harmonious interaction between people and nature, and is also consistent with another exhibition "Nature Matters" at the Twin Oaks, which is organized by the Art Bank Taiwan that focuses on environmental issues.
