Hengchun ballads to ring in Houston night

A "land-sound-scape” performance in the spirit of traditional Taiwanese music and poetry will be held at the Asia Society Texas Center on Nov. 6.

"From Taiwan's Hengchun Township to the Stage” features Jen Shyu (徐秋雁), a multi-talented vocalist of Taiwanese and East Timorese heritage, a Stanford graduate and Fulbright scholar, and a cultural ambassador of folksongs from Taiwan's Hengchun County.

The two-hour concert will include folksongs inspired by iconic Hengchun folksinger and storyteller Chen Da (陳達), whose performances were characterized by spontaneity and the playing of Taiwanese moon zither (月琴).

Shyu will also perform her own inventive arrangements, some of which are set to poems by her late mentor, Taiwanese poet Edward Te-chang Cheng (鄭德昌).
