Southern Californian filmgoers will be treated to a wide selection of Taiwanese films this year at the 16th San Diego Asian Film Festival running from Nov. 5 through 14.
The 2015 Taiwan Film Showcase will kick off on Nov. 6 with "The Wonderful Wedding (大囍臨門),” a family drama mashup of Taiwanese puns and Chinese superstition amidst matrimonial lunacy. Director Huang Chao-liang (黃朝亮) will also attend a pre-screening reception at 5.30pm.
The second day of the showcase on Nov. 7 will focus on parent-child relations. A single mom enlists the help of three nerdy bachelors in "We Are Family (我們全家不太熟)”; director Sunny Yu (于瑋珊) will explain her take on the shotgun wedding in "The Kids (孩子)”; and mother and sons struggle with substance and self worth in "Thanatos, Drunk (醉‧生夢死).”
A trio of experimental films, including Midi Z's (趙德胤) portrayal of a homesick immigrant worker in "The Palace on the Sea (海上皇宮)” and the seventh installment of Tsai Ming-liang's (蔡明亮) "Walker” series, will set the stage for Nov. 8.
The showcase will wrap up with "Flowers of Taipei: Taiwan New Cinema (光陰的故事-台灣新電影),” a documentation of Taiwan's impact upon contemporary world cinema, and "The Assassin (刺客聂隐娘),” the Cannes-winning martial arts epic by celebrated director Hou Hsiao-hsien (侯孝賢).
