Young Taiwanese composers to join New York festival

Two contemporary composers from Taiwan will present their works at the Mise-En Music Festival in New York on June 13. Organized by ensemble mise-en, an innovative and versatile New York-based contemporary music collective led by Korean composer Moon Young Ha, the five-day marathon for new music will run from June 10 through 14.

Susan Yu (游淑靜), director of festival co-organizer Taipei Cultural Center in New York, explained that the annual event features a wide and varied contemporary repertoire made possible by collaboration with several cultural institutions in New York. The show will be held concurrently at five sites: Taipei Cultural Center in New York, the Cell Theatre, Scandinavia House, MISE-EN PLACE Bushwick, and Roulette.

The event will be presented in collaboration with Iktus Percussion, Dead Language, Rhythm Method String Quartet, and more than 30 international composers. Their compositions were selected from the festival's call for scores, which yielded 737 submissions by 602 composers from 51 countries.

Among the visiting composers are Taiwan's young-and-upcoming musicians Chang Shiuan (張玹) and Lin Chih-liang (林芝良), who wereare invited by the organizers to present their works at the lobby of the Taipei Cultural Center in this year's event.

Chang, co-director and conductor of Hai-Dao Ensemble (海島室內樂), is committed to combining traditional and classical music to reflect modern life experiences. He will present a work titled "Monk (武僧),” a chamber piece using flute, clarinet (bass clarinet), cello, and piano.

Hailing from southern Taiwan, Lin's music focuses on expressing emotion through rhythm, and refining the aesthetics of noise and electronic music. The young pianist will present a solo titled "Falling Stars” on June 13.
