Taiwanese artist Michael Lin's art installation debuts in Japan

After a three-year hiatus, Roppongi Art Night 2022 returned as a full-scale event from Sep. 17 through Sep. 19, featuring works by Takashi Murakami (村上隆) and 70 other artists. The artworks were displayed in cultural facilities, commercial complexes, and streets throughout the city. This year, Taiwan Cultural Center in Tokyo collaborated with Mori Art Museum to facilitate the Japanese debut of artist Michael Lin's (林明弘) installation "Windows (窗)," showcasing Taiwan's soft power in contemporary art.

At the opening ceremony of Roppongi Art Night at the Roppongi Hills Arena, the director of Mori Art Museum Mami Kataoka (片岡真實) expressed her gratitude to the participating venues, co-organizers, and artists. Mami Kataoka hoped that the art night would provide a magical immersive experience.

Lin’s work "Windows" is inspired by traditional Taiwanese lattice windows in the pattern of coins. Covering the GIOTTO HOUSE building and the Roppongi Hills West Walk with the lattice motif, "Windows" ingeniously blended Taiwan imagery into the cityscape of Roppongi and highlighted the originality and uniqueness of Taiwan.

According to the Taiwan Cultural Center in Tokyo, the center has worked closely and remained on good terms with Mori Art Museum in recent years, as well as pushing forward Taiwanese artists' exposure at Roppongi Art Night. Although the pandemic has affected international transport and art exchanges, the Taiwan Cultural Center in Tokyo has been working to facilitate the participation of Taiwanese artists in Japanese art festivals.

Roppongi Art Night is an art extravaganza co-organized by Mori Art Museum, the iconic museum of Japanese contemporary art, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, and arts and cultural organizations in Tokyo. Since 2009, Roppongi Art Night has transformed art galleries, commercial facilities, and streets of Roppongi into venues for the event, combining the idea of "Museum without Walls" and civic engagement.
