The first session of the 2016 Talks a la Taiwan in Hong Kong kicked off on March 18, with environmentalist Li Chia-wei (李家維), choreographer Bulareyaung Pagarlava (布拉瑞揚．帕格勒法), community developer Lin Jun-cheng (林峻丞), and theater director Stan Lai (賴聲川) arriving from Taiwan to give talks between March and June.
On March 18, Li, the director of the Dr. Cecilia Koo Botanic Conservation Center (辜嚴倬雲植物保種中心), delivered talks on environmental issues and how the botanic conservation center tackles natural disasters and saves endangered species.
Bulareyaung, a choreographer from the Paiwan tribe of Taiwan. Bulareyaung shared his life's journey through dance and how he constructed his cultural identity on April 26.
On May 27, Lin shared his personal experience in empowering communities. As the owner and director of The Can (甘樂文創), a community school for disadvantaged children, Lin collaborates with local artists to revive the historic Sanxia District with culture-driven creativity.
Lai, a prominent theater director, explored the development of theater during the late 1980s and1990s on June 24. Some of his most famous works, including "That Evening, We Performed Crosstalk (那一夜, 我們說相聲),” "Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land (暗戀桃花源),” and "The Village (寶島一村),” explore the historical past and creative strengths of Taiwan.
Established by the Kwang Hwa Information and Culture Centre, Talks a la Taiwan have been held for five consecutive years to promote Taiwanese culture in Hong Kong. Over 40 scholars, artists, and professionals from Taiwan have joined the series, sharing topics encompassing literature, film, food culture, arts, architecture, environment, and media.
