Taiwanese writer Tsai Su-fen (蔡素芬) and scholar Lin Shiu-fu (林水福) joined a literary forum hosted by the Taiwan Cultural Center in Tokyo to deliver keynote speeches on Oct. 30.

During the literary talks, Tsai noted: "It is a writer's responsibility to write about homeland issues, and speak to readers about society and culture through books. Literature can express emotions toward the motherland and reflect social and historical context.”

The Japanese version of Tsai's "Children of the Salt Pans (鹽田兒女)” was formally released in Japan last year. With the Ministry of Culture's support, "Olive Tree (橄欖樹),” the sequel to "Children of the Salt Pans,” will be released this November.

Lin, a scholar who has translated a wide range of works by Japanese authors, explored the Taiwan-Japan literary connection by giving a speech on the development of Japanese-language literature in Taiwan.
