In cooperation with the Polish Arteria Foundation, the Cultural Division of the Taipei Representative Office in Germany organized the 15th Five Flavours Asian Film Festival in November. Screenings were held in two theaters in Warsaw, Muranów and Kinoteka, with screenings also held online on the official website due to the ongoing pandemic situation.
The festival featured seven Taiwanese films under the title of "Taiwanese Queer Cinema," including films such as "As We Like It (揭大歡喜)" directed by Wei Ying-chuan (魏瑛娟) and Chen Hung-I (陳宏一), "Born to be Human (生而為人)" by Lily Ni (倪曜), "Dear Tenant (親愛的房客)" by Cheng Yu-chieh (鄭有傑), "The Teacher (我的靈魂是愛做的)" by Chen Ming-lang (陳敏郎), "Alifu (阿莉芙)" by Wang Yu-lin (王育麟), "Spider Lilies (刺青)" by Zero Chou (周美玲), and "Moneyboys (金錢男孩)" by Taiwanese-Austrian director C.B. Yi, which was shot in Taiwan and selected for the “Un Certain Regard” section of the Cannes Film Festival.
Founded in 2007, Five Flavours is the only annual film festival in Poland that focuses exclusively on Asian cinema, intending to promote the discussion of important cultural and social issues in Asia, tracking the development of Asian cinema and society, and promote the diversity of Asian culture and creativity. The festival features eight sections: New Asian Cinema, Retrospective: Wong Kar Wai, Olympic Section, Taiwanese Queer Cinema, Asian Cinerama, Burma Today, Special Screenings, and Polish Flavours. Films on the show have been selected from across Asia, including Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Thailand, India, and Bangladesh, spanning a wider range than previous years.
This year, the festival also included Festival Studio, with filmmakers invited to give online talks as a means of getting around the barriers of the pandemic. As part of this, on November 26, Singaporean director Ong Kuo Sin gave a much-awaited talk about "Queer Cinema, Not Only from Taiwan," exploring the traditions and regional variations of LGBT culture starting from the Taiwanese film "Alifu."
