Taiwanese calligraphy maestro Tong Yang-tze (董陽孜) was featured in a special month-long exhibition titled "Silent Movement” in Belgium, serving as a visual counterpart to the 2016 Queen Elisabeth Music Competition at the Center for Fine Arts, Belgium.

"Silent Movement” focused on works combining the "dots” and "turns” that appear in the process of calligraphy writing, in which the interdisciplinary calligrapher challenged the traditional boundaries by her inclusion of Western fine art elements.

Although Tong did not intend to imitate any kind of musical composition, the weight, speed, and continuous movement of the dots and turns suggest not only beats and rhythm, but also underscore a relationship between the brushstrokes and the negative space on the paper.

The 2016 Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition of Belgium was co-hosted by the Center for Fine Arts, Brussels and the Salle Henry Le Boeuf, BOZAR. The organizers intended for audience members to listen for "musical notes” in Tong's calligraphy after the concerts.
