Taiwan dancers, choreographers take the spotlight at Düsseldorf fair

Taiwan marked its fifth year of participation at Internationale Tanzmesse NRW, Düsseldorf's biennial dance fair that took place this year from Aug. 29 through Sept. 1, with a record-breaking number of Taiwanese troupes and participants.

Held every two years in Düsseldorf, Internationale Tanzmesse NRW is one of the world's largest modern dance fairs featuring exhibitions, lectures, performances, and workshops. Dancers and cultural professionals from around the globe gather to learn from each other and establish new networks. Taiwan has been a veteran participant since 2008.

Organized by the Ministry of Culture's Berlin office, this year's Taiwan delegation featured a record-breaking number of 36 troupes. Ranging from innovative new performers to internationally renowned and classic dance groups, the showcase was a comprehensive introduction to Taiwan's dance development over the past years.

Over 50 performances representing 30 nations took place at Düsseldorf, including "Kids" by choreographer Liu Kuan-hsiang (劉冠詳) and "13 Tongues" by Cloud Gate 2 artistic director Cheng Tsung-lung (鄭宗龍). The original choreography for both productions were based on their private life stories, and their emotional and personal growth shone through.

By partaking in Internationale Tanzmesse NRW, Taiwan's dance troupes have drawn worldwide attention and demonstrated Taiwan's unique dance culture. Participants from Taiwan have also expanded their international networks and horizons, returning home with new vision and zest.
