As readers look to prominent media outlets for their top selection of the year, critics from The New York Times have placed director Hou Hsiao-hsien (侯孝賢) and artist Lee Mingwei (李明維) on their best of culture lists in 2015.
The grandeur and sweeping long shots of Hou's wuxia masterpiece "The Assassin (刺客聶隱娘)” was tied for first place with George Miller's "Mad Max: Fury Road” in The Best Movies of 2015 list compiled by Timesian co-chief film critic Manohla Dargis, who urged her readers to go find "the biggest screen you can” for optimal viewing experience.
"Sonic Blossom (聲之綻),” an interactive exhibition offering the gift of song, was a powerfully intimate experience staged at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The personalized delivery of Schubert lieder through gifted young singers garnered Lee two mentions - a nod on The Best Classical Music list for "originality and effectiveness” and No. 9 for The Best in Art in 2015.
