Featuring paintings by young eight artists in Taiwan, "Her Gaze” took the center stage of the Taipei Cultural Center in New York to showcase contemporary issues through the vantage of female sensibilities.
Organized by independent curator Josiane Lai (賴麗惠), "Her Gaze” is underpinned by a quote from feminist writer Virginia Woolf: "A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction.”
Although the featured artists of this exhibition were born between 1980 and 1989, more than a hundred years after Woolf, their works are imbued with similar sensitivity and introspective qualities.
Ranging in age from 26 to 35, the eight featured artists — Chang Chia-yiang (張嘉穎), Chang En-tzu (張恩慈), Joyce Ho (何采柔), Ho Szu-wei (何思瑋), Hsieh Yi-ju (謝怡如), Hsiao Chu-fang (蕭筑方), Huang Hai-hsin (黃海欣), and Yen Yu-ting (顏妤庭) — are befitting examples of those who have procured rooms of their own to pursue creative fulfillment.
