Robot, drums, opera to meet Singaporean audiences

Contemporary dance, meditative drumming, and innovative Chinese theater from Taiwan will be staged in Singapore from Feb. 12 to 17 as part of the 2016 Huayi Festival.

Choreographer and software programmer Huang Yi's "Huang Yi & KUKA,” a duet dance piece with his robotic German partner KUKA, will weave together the art of dance and aesthetics with the realm of robotics to tell a tale of humanity.

Percussion troupe U-Theatre's "Beyond Time,” a performance combining drumming with sacred dance rituals, will reflect the grandeur of the infinite universe through choreography mimicking planetary movement, mirrored floors, and light projections of rainfall, eclipse, and full moon.

GuoGuang Opera Company's "OneHundred Years on Stage,” a theatrical take on the centennial progress of Peking opera, will delineate the lives of three generations of opera artists from the conservative era of male-only performances to life during the Cultural Revolution.

U-Theatre will also offer a ticketed workshop on Feb. 13 for those who are interested in participating in their daily drumming and meditative training. No prior percussion experience required.

The 2016 Huayi Festival will run from Feb. 12 through 21 at Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay.
