A Taiwanese film and literature series will be held at the Taiwan Cultural Center in Tokyo from Oct. 3 through Nov. 14 to introduce Taiwan's diverse culture through film screenings and book forums.
"Cannot Live Without You (不能沒有你),” a Taiwanese film directed by Leon Dai (戴立忍), will be screened on Oct. 2 as a precursor to the month-long series. The film takes inspiration from Taiwanese news of a single father's attempt to jump off a bridge with his daughter in 2003.
Soji Shimada (島田莊司) and Wang Jian-min (王建閔), mystery writers respectively from Japan and Taiwan, will kick off the series on Oct. 3 with a Q&A session and their take on Wang's book ― "Wandering Through Streets of Illusion (虛擬街頭漂流記).”
Next up is a book forum hosted by Japanese writer Nakajima Kyoko (中島京子) on Oct. 17. She will be introducing "Seeing Off (目送)” by author Lung Ying-tai (龍應台). Taiwanese film "Viva Tonal (跳舞時代)” directed by Chien Wei-ssu (簡偉斯) and Kuo Chen-ti (郭珍弟) will be screened before the forum.
Oct. 24 will open with a session featuring the White Terror era and the 228 Incident. Japanese scholar Shizue Tamura (田村治津枝) will lead the talks on the book "Decayed Land (短歌行)” by writer Chung Wen-yin (鐘文音) and the film "Three Times (最好的時光)” directed by Hou Hsiao-hsien (侯孝賢).
Taiwanese illustrator Wan Wan (彎彎) will make a public appearance on Nov. 7. Her talk will be preceded by the screening of "Orz Boys 囧男孩),” an idiosyncratic film that offers glimpses of modern life in Taiwan by director Yang Ya-che (楊亞喆).
On Nov. 8, Japanese scholar Tarumi Chie (垂水千惠) will explore Taiwan under Japanese rule through Chou Yung-han's (邱永漢) books and the Taiwanese film "Blue Brave: The Legend of Formosa in 1895 (一八九五)” by Hung Chih-yu (洪智育).
Rounding up by the series will be a film screening of "The Moment (那時此刻)” by Taiwanese director Yang Li-chou (楊力州) on Nov. 14. Yang will also introduce books by notable writers Chu Tien-wen (朱天文), Chu Tien-hsin (朱天心), and Chang Shi-kuo (張系國) of Taiwan.
