Traditional arts-oriented Taiwan Week in Malaysia

The 2015 Taiwan CulturalWeek titled "A Grand Gala of Taiwan Traditional Arts” will kick off on Sept. 22 in Kuala Lumpur, with photographer Huang Shih-shang (黃適上), GuoGuang Opera Company (國光劇團), and XinXin Nanguan Ensemble (心心南管樂坊) presenting the traditional arts of Taiwan.

Co-curated by the Ministry of Culture and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia, this year'sTaiwan Cultural Week in Malaysia aims to introduce the diversity of Taiwan's culture to Southeast Asia and enhance bilateral exchanges in the arts.

Set for Sept. 22 through 27, a photography exhibition on Huang's works will offer glimpses of traditional arts such as opera, religious beliefs, and temple fairs under the impact of urbanization and globalization in Taiwan.

The XinXin Nanguan Ensemble will present several Nanguan music pieces on Sept. 22 and 23. Nanguan is a type of traditional music originating from the imperial Tang dynasty and remains prevalent in Taiwan and among Asian groups in Southeast Asia today.

Taiwan's GuoGuang Opera Company will also make their first appearance in Malaysia. They will stage "Young Curtain (青春謝幕),” a performance which combines elements of Peking opera and modern theater, on Sept. 25 and Sept. 27.
