The National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute (NTCRI) has organized a delegation to join the 2015 Silk Road Cultural and Creative Products Trade Fair in Xi'an in the hopes of introducing Taiwan's top craft products to northern China and the Silk Road economic belt.
Located in mainland China's greater western area, Xi'an City in Shaanxi Province is an ancient capital at the starting point of the Silk Road. The NTCRI will bring selected fine works by 11 Taiwanese artisans to participate in the 2015 Silk Road Trade Fair at the inland city for the first time, and explore the region's profound historical significance and market potential.
All the crafts selected for the upcoming exhibition are made by original Taiwanese brands. The delegation aims to highlight designs that are both creative and traditional, and closer to practical use in daily life. The polished products also demonstrate the exquisite craftsmanship achieved by paying attention to details while pursuing excellence.
The selected products will showcase innovative Taiwanese techniques, such as pottery made by combining long-distance infrared and ceramic glaze; temmoku porcelain baked with rare earth elements; lacquerware made by combining resin coatings with sculptural aesthetics; and natural-hued earthenware achieved by the use of organic materials such as red earth and straw ash.
The NTCRI's own design brand "Yii” will also participate in the Xi'an exhibition to showcase the achievements of combining Taiwan's top craftsmanship with modern design. The "Yii” collection includes the bamboo "43” chair created by internationally renowned German designer Konstantin Grcic in cooperation with Taiwanese bamboo craftsman Chen Kao-ming (陳高明), and delicate lapin pottery cups and plates made by National Crafts Award winner Tang Ruen-ching (湯潤清).
The 2015 Silk Road Fair will be held at the Qujiang International Conference & Exhibition Center in Xi'an from May 30 through June 2.
