Student orchestra from Taiwan to perform in Ho Chi Minh City

The National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra’s (NTSO) 2019 International Youth Orchestra Camp will hold concerts titled "The Youth Stars across Taiwan and Vietnam" at the Conservatory of Ho Chi Minh City and the Municipal Theatre of Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam on July 30 and 31. The delegation will be led by NTSO General Director Liu Shuan-yung (劉玄詠).

Under the guidance of Taiwanese conductor Mei-Ann Chen (陳美安), the orchestra camp will first hold performances at the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying) in Kaohsiung on July 25 and NTSO's Wufeng Hall in Taichung the following day prior to departing for Vietnam.

The Kaohsiung and Wufeng concerts will also feature student choruses from Tung-Xing Elementary School of Taichung City, Affiliated Elementary Department of the National Nanke International Experimental High School of Tainan City, Jian Gong Primary School of Hsinchu City, and Lai-Cuo Elementary School of Taichung City. All four were winning teams of the 2019 Yue Yuen National Children's Choir Competition (裕元獎全國兒童合唱表演賽).

Since 1991, NTSO has been organizing a youth orchestra camp during summer break every year. The camp has since become the most prominent orchestra program for teenagers in Taiwan.

This year, NTSO selected 80 excellent young students among 367 applicants, including several students from the United States, for the camp that ran from July 17 through 24 in central Taiwan. In addition to Chen, the camp’s instructors also included other significant musicians from the most elite conservatories and orchestras around the world. Two camp concerts were also held to help the students learn more about their instructors’ performance skills and experience.

"The Youth Stars across Taiwan and Vietnam" concerts are made possible by the Tourism Bureau of Taiwan's Ministry of Transportation and Communications, the Conservatory of Ho Chi Minh City, and the Saigon Philharmonic Orchestra, with additional support provided by the Pou Chen Group, the Yue Yuen Education Foundation, and the Taiwan Reading and Culture Foundation.
