Art festival in Ebisu, Tokyo, features video works from Taiwan

The Yebisu International Festival for Art & Alternative Visions 2024 has returned to Tokyo after a three-year hiatus, running from Feb. 2 to 18. This time, supported by the Taiwan Cultural Center in Tokyo, a special screening program titled “Recent Video Works from Taiwan” is presented at the event, featuring 14 works by 12 Taiwanese artists.

The Yebisu International Festival for Art & Alternative Visions is a unique annual international festival of moving images and art taking place in Ebisu, Tokyo, hosting a variety of events, including exhibitions, screenings, live performances, and talk sessions.

The theme of the festival this year is “30 Ways to Go to the Moon,” showcasing 162 artworks and 44 films by 125 groups of artists from 27 countries and regions. The special screening program is co-curated by noted Taiwanese video artist Yuan Goang-ming (袁廣鳴) and Japanese curator Mio Iwakiri, displaying contemporary urban life in Taiwan and its sociopolitical atmosphere.

Additionally, the work of renowned Taiwanese photographer Chou Ching-hui (周慶輝) is also being featured in the festival exhibition. His work “No.2,” a piece from his photography series “Animal Farm (人的莊園),” represents the problem of fast-paced modern living through the concept of the convenience store.
