The 2024 Asian Art Biennial is set to open in November this year. The National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts (NTMoFA) revealed the Biennial theme, as well as the first batch of participating artists and their works, in a press conference on Aug. 1.
This year, the Biennial is titled “How to Hold Your Breath (所有令人屏息的).” It is inspired by the idiom “don’t hold your breath,” which indicates something is unlikely to happen. However, according to the curatorial team, “How to Hold Your Breath” instead hints at potential hope.
The Biennial will see the participation of artists from over 20 countries in East Asia, West and Central Asia, and Asia Pacific, highlighting migration and cultural change. The NTMoFA unveiled the projects of five participating artists, including New Caledonia-born, Mayotte-based artist Nathalie Muchamad’s “Production Notes: Breadfruit, Mutiny, Planetarity;” London-born, Black British artist Tao Leigh Goffe’s “Black Pacific, Chinese Atlantic;” Taiwanese artist Wang Yu-song (王煜松)’s “Microbial Studies;” Uzbekistan-born, France-based artist Saodat Ismailova’s “Arslanbob;” and Malaysian artist Sharon Chin’s “Portal.”
The 2024 Asian Art Biennial will run from Nov. 16, 2024, to Mar. 2, 2025, showcasing contemporary arts from Asia Pacific countries, along with other related activities, including seminars, forums, and workshops. For more information, visit NTMoFA’s website or the Biennial’s Facebook page.
