The Ministry of Culture (MOC), in collaboration with the Melbourne Fringe Festival, presents the 5th Fringe Focus Taiwan program to showcase dance pieces “TOMATO” and “Girl’s Notes (少女須知)” by Taiwanese choreographers Chou Kuan-jou (周寬柔) and Su Pin-wen (蘇品文), respectively.
Fringe Focus Taiwan is a highlight of the Melbourne Fringe, displaying exceptional contemporary, innovative, and experimental artworks and artists from Taiwan each year.
Created by the gifted dancer-choreographer Chou Kuan-jou for herself and two other performers, “TOMATO” is a cultural experience both playful and provocative. This enticingly tasty work is an absurdly funny expression of Chou’s ongoing interest in the sexualized body from a feminist perspective.
With captivating on stage presence, the “Girl’s Notes” by Su Pin-wen explores the intentions behind our everyday actions. Su’s work challenges heteronormative notions of gender, feminism, and nudity, taking dance into conceptual realms to interrogate notions of gender and the power dynamics of women’s sexuality within relationships.
“TOMATO” will be performed from Oct. 2 to 5, followed by “Girl’s Notes” from Oct. 11 to 12. For more information, visit the Melbourne Fringe’s website.
