Taiwan’s exhibition ‘Tradition and Technology of Chinese Calligraphy’ held in Japan

The Taiwan Cultural Center in Tokyo, in collaboration with Tamkang University (淡江大學), launched the exhibition “The Tradition and Technology of Chinese Calligraphy – E-brush and Chang Ping-huang’s Calligraphy Exhibition (書法的傳統與科技—e筆暨張炳煌書畫展)” on Feb. 13.

In addition to showcase calligrapher Chang Ping-huang’s (張炳煌) traditional Chinese calligraphy works, the exhibition highlights the “smart e-brush,” which he co-developed with Tamkang University. This innovative tool integrates traditional calligraphy with artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

During the opening ceremony, Li I-yang (李逸洋), Taiwan’s Representative to Japan, commended Chang—recognized as a “national treasure”—for his lifelong dedication to promoting Chinese calligraphy. Noting that the “smart e-brush” improves the learning experience, he expressed his belief that the Chinese calligraphy will regain popularity.

Chang noted that the traditional methods of teaching Chinese calligraphy are often ineffective, which motivated his collaboration with Tamkang University to develop the “smart e-brush” and lower the entry barrier for learners. He demonstrated the e-brush during the opening, which perfectly simulates brush writing, leaving a strong impression on visitors.

Running until Mar. 14 at the Taiwan Cultural Center in Tokyo, the exhibition features 54 works by Chang and other calligraphers, showcasing the seamless integration of tradition and innovation.
