The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Sydney collaborates with the Arts Centre Melbourne to present “Gapu Ngupan (追尋彩虹),” a Taiwan-Australia co-production, at the Asia-Pacific Triennial of Performing Arts (Asia TOPA) from Feb. 27 to Mar. 1.
Commissioned by Asia TOPA, “Gapu Ngupan” marks a significant milestone in international and cross-cultural collaboration, emerging from a five-year partnership between artists and producers of different generations from Taiwan and Australia.
Blending the traditions and cultures of Taiwan’s Paiwan people and Australia’s Yolŋu, “Gapu Ngupan” incorporates music, dance, and video installation. Taiwanese musician Suming Rupi serves as the production’s co-artistic director and composer. He is a multi-award winning Amis singer-songwriter, notable for receiving Song of the Year at the 27th Golden Melody Awards with “Aka Pisawad (不要放棄).”
The production features performers from both Taiwan and Australia. Taiwanese performers include Seredau Taliyaran (桑梅絹), winner of Best Indigenous Singer at the 29th Golden Melody Awards; Paiwan nose flute musician Ljaucu Talimaraw (蔡清安); and TAI Body Theatre’s Piya Talaliman (李偉雄) and Temu Masin (徐智文). Australian performers include Yolŋu artists Rachael Wallis and Banula Marika from North East Arnhem Land.
