Taiwan to join book fairs in Singapore, Malaysia

To introduce Taiwan's diverse cultural scene to Southeast Asia, the Ministry of Culture will showcase a wide range of literary works through book displays as well as film screenings and concerts in Singapore and Malaysia this year.

The Taiwan Pavilion will feature roughly 15,000 books, including award-winning works and bestsellers, for both fairs. More than 100 Taiwan-based conventional and digital publishers will travel to Southeast Asia to connect with overseas publishers.

To make more literary works from Taiwan available for readers in Singapore and Malaysia, the Ministry will also hold licensing sessions this year to present the publishing trends of Taiwan, explain the licensing process, and outline the marketing strategy for translated editions of Taiwan literature.

An exclusive event is also scheduled for Malaysia for independent publishers from Taiwan and Malaysia to network and exchange ideas.

In addition, both Singapore Book Fair and BookFest Malaysia will be inviting Taiwanese authors such as Syaman Rapongan (夏曼.藍波安), Rimui (里慕伊.阿紀), Badai (巴代), and Gan Yao-ming (甘耀明) to hold dialogue with local readers and publishers.

Moreover, the two fairs will screen "Reading Taiwan Literature I (閱讀時光 I),” an audiovisual series adapted from local stories, and "Panay (太陽的孩子),” an award-winning film on indigenous culture. Directors, actors, and singer-songwriters from the featured films will also talk to audiences to help them gain a better understanding of Taiwan's culture and people from different perspectives.

For the first time, Taiwan's literary films will be screened will Malay subtitles. An interpreter will also be at the venue to help Malay-speaking audiences during the post-screening forums.

As for the two upcoming literature-themed music concerts in Singapore and Malaysia, the lineup will include artists such as aboriginal musicians Laka Umaw (拉卡.巫茂) and Suming (舒米恩) as well as Hakka band ZiXuan & Slow Train (黃子軒與山平快).
