Taiwan brands & characters to join HK licensing show

To promote Taiwan's original characters and licensing opportunities, the Ministry of Culture has selected eleven outstanding brands to join the Hong Kong International Licensing Show from Jan. 8 through 10.

Under the banner "Fresh Taiwan,” the Taiwan pavilion helps introduce and promote designs or characters that embody diverse and rich cultural contents of Taiwan to overseas markets. The program helped secure licensing agreements totaling more than NT$200 million at the China Licensing Expo last October.

This year, a total of eleven brands, including the Golden Horse Award-nominated animation "Barkley (小猫巴克里),” clothing brand Banana Monkey (八奈奈), YouTube animation channel "NowEPo (鬧一波大師),” and original characters RiceMan (米粒大叔), Tequinya (貓舌蘭), Princess Sarah (莎拉公主病), Kuroro (酷樂樂), Smiling Crocodile (傻笑鱷魚), CHECK8 (小八將), AmisA (愛米莎), and Waiting & Hope (等待與希望) will seek partnership opportunities in Hong Kong.

Licensing agent Ho Chi-kun (何志焜), who is serving as director of the Fresh Taiwan pavilion this year, noted that as Taiwan's original intellectual property embodies elements of local, indigenous, Japanese, American, and European cultures, diversity is the foremost advantageous characteristic that draws international attention.

Joining international licensing trade fairs will help deepen understanding and increase exposure of Taiwan's original designs and brands on the international stage. It will also encourage friendly exchanges and collaborations among Asian regions, added Ho.

GoodNine Café, a cafe brand working with Taiwanese coffee roaster Lai Yu-chuan (賴昱權), top prize winner of the 2014 World Coffee Roasting Championship, will be offering latte art featuring Taiwanese original characters alongside the exhibition.

To boost the influence of the Fresh Taiwan brand and help more Taiwan brands gain licensing experiences, the Ministry will partner with the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) to form a joint Taiwan pavilion for the HK licensing show and the upcoming Licensing Expo Japan.

Certified by the International Licensing Industry Merchandiser's Association, the Hong Kong International Licensing Show is the world's third-largest licensing trade fair. As a major platform for copyright trading in Asia, the fair received a total of 377 brands from twelve countries last year, showing an increase of 4% in participants compared to that of 2016.
