"The Project Complex in Bangkok," a collaborative arts program promoting exchange between Taiwanese and Thai artists, will showcase a series of projects from Sept. 14 throughout the end of this year in Bangkok.
Organized by the Cultural Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in Thailand, the program provides a platform for artists to develop experimental projects spanning exhibitions, performing arts, film screenings, community arts, and forums during their residency in Taiwan and Thailand.
"THAITAI Re-Conversation: Based on True Story," the first project co-curated by Taiwan's Open Contemporary Art Center and Thailand's Baan Noorg Collaborative Arts & Culture, will present how Taiwanese artists reinterpret the relationship between human beings and space.
Through a one month-long residency at Bangkok's Chinatown, a Taiwanese team named Reading Space (朗讀空間) renovated old houses and streets, transforming the historical area into a new form of art through collective art creation.
Thai artist Supphakarn Wongkaew, who explored the city of Taipei during his residency in Taiwan, will display a large old photograph of Taipei's Jiangcheng Circle (建成圓環) before its demolishment in 2016 at one of the old houses to show the similarity between the Taipei landscape and the 22 July Circle in Chinatown, a roundabout built to commemorate Thailand's participation in World War I.
Opening on Sept. 16, the second project, titled "Metropolis of the Future: A Futurology Study of Asian Mega-Cities," will present artists Lin Shu-kai (林書楷) and Nokyung Pusigard's exploration and imagination of Asia's cityscapes.
Lin, who visited Thailand for the first time, expressed his surprise to see how the landscape of Bangkok coincides with the future city of his imagination, in which he fancies a universe of many buildings with tiered towers.
Lin's artworks will be displayed along with Pusigard's installations that reflect his observations and concerns on spatial allocation in urban cities in Asia.
The second project will also showcase five videos from Mongolia, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam to present young Asian artists' imagination of cities in the future.
