The Ministry of Culture and Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia, in cooperation with Malaysian indie record company Eargasm, will be hosting the 2020 Tian Kong Music Festival from September 16 through October 28, with performances at 9:00 pm every Wednesday night. These performances will be streamed for free on the Facebook pages for Malaysian radio station 988 FM and for the Tian Kong Music Festival itself. Presented in the guise of a current affairs show titled "The Unexpected," each night's performance will be interspersed with news broadcast and interview segments.
Tian Kong Music Festival, originally a large outdoor festival in Malaysia featuring Chinese-language indie music, was first organized by the independent music label "Eargasm" in 2018.
This year marks the third time the festival has been held, with the theme "the unexpected," inspired obviously by the current Covid-19 pandemic that has seen the festival move online. The organizers have invited Malaysian singer Yingz and six Taiwanese performing units to perform.
The Taiwanese performers are 2020 Golden Melody Best New Vocal nominees Accusefive; Hush, who has worked with some of Taiwan's leading ladies of music; inaugural "Jungle Voice" winner Yo Lee; 2019 Golden Indie Best New Artist (Group) and Best Rock Album winners Lily; 2019 Golden Indie Best Alternative Song winner Enno Cheng; and many-time Golden Indie and Golden Melody nominee Misi Ke. These artists bring rock, alternative, R&B, jazz-rock, Taiwanese electronic, and folk music, offering viewers a diverse array of musical options.
In addition to providing a veritable musical feast, it is also a showcase for the diversity and creative depth and breadth of Taiwanese independent music.
