Taiwan to launch online exhibition in support of India's arts sector amid pandemic

Taipei Economic and Cultural Center in India, the representative office of Taiwan in the Southeast Asian country, will launch a virtual contemporary art exhibition that runs through Nov. 30 to show Taiwan's unreserved support for Indian arts and cultural sectors hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Titled "2020 Taiwan Contemporary Art Online Exhibition – Taiwan Under COVID-19: United Through Art," the online display will present paintings by 36 Taiwanese artists from different generations.

The participating artists include Liao Shiou-ping (廖修平) who is known for transforming the portrait of ordinary Taiwanese into artistic symbols by blending representative elements in Taiwan’s culture with contemporary art.

Viewers will be able to enjoy art installations by Lai Jun T (賴純純) who projects her sensitivity and great concern of the degrading environment on a number types of artworks, including sculpture, installation, painting, and drawing.

The exhibition will also feature ink paintings by Julie Hsieh (謝宛儒) whose works are regarded as a contemporary expression of black-and-white art. Sometimes, instead of hand-made brushes, the artist paints with her fingers to produce subtle marks that present a more spot-on idea she has in mind.

In addition, artist Lien Chien-hsing (連建興) and sculptor Liao Ying-hsi (廖迎晰) will present their selected pieces at the exhibition. Lien will introduce audiences in India his works inspired by the age-old conflict between tradition and innovation. Through paintings, the Keelung-born painter seeks to raise awareness of the current overexploitation of natural resources and its impact on the environment.

Liao, on the other hand, draws inspirations from her own outlook on life. With her stainless steel sculptures, she seeks to challenge the conventional ideas and subjects people are familiar with.

The exhibition is a joint effort made by a number of government bodies and academic institutions, including the Ministry of Culture, the Cultural Division & Education Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Center in India, and the University of Delhi.
