The musical performance “The Wedding Banquet: A New Musical,” based on Taiwanese director Ang Lee’s acclaimed film of the same name, is set to premiere in Taipei this May, featuring Taiwanese and Broadway performers.
Adapted for a modern audience, "The Wedding Banquet" incorporates nearly 30 new pop songs and blends Eastern and Western stage design elements, offering a fresh perspective on Ang Lee’s classic.
One of the featured Broadway stars, Telly Leung, is renowned for his talents in both singing and acting. With a remarkable career spanning seven Broadway productions, he stands out for his portrayal of the lead role in “Aladdin.”
Eric Kuo (郭柏毅), chairman and executive director of Hua Musical (華文音樂劇), the production company behind the show, stated that this musical marks the first international collaboration in Taiwan with a Broadway production team from the US, promising an international-level and culturally enriching production.
The premiere will take place at the Taipei Performing Arts Center on May 24, with performances scheduled to resume at the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts in September.
