In collaboration with the CCA Andratx Art Centre, the Cultural Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Spain invited Taiwanese artist Sean Tseng (曾彥翔) to join a one-month artist-in-residence program at CCA Andratx in August. Tseng's studio will open on Aug. 19, and he will share his art practice, experiments, and creations, during his residency. In addition, Tseng will have discussions with fellow resident artists, local museum professionals, and arts workers, hoping to exchange experiences and ideas on contemporary art from different cultural perspectives.
Founded in 2001, the CCA Andratx is located in the south of Mallorca, Spain. The art center is dedicated to supporting the career development of artists. The "CCA Artist-in-Residence Program" has so far invited more than 500 artists from 20 countries.
Tseng is CCA Andratx's first resident artist who comes from Taiwan. He will use the local natural environment and his studio space as the background, combine local resources to conduct relevant experiments and research as well as create installation works based on the concept of images and spaces.
Tseng said that, in recent years, he has focused on observing the depth of shadows. During his residency, Tseng will continue to observe shadows, immerse himself in nature, and bring his experience and materials back to the studio for experimentation and creation. At the same time, he is also looking forward to communicating with other artists in residence, and jointly exploring how the perception experience from different cultural backgrounds can become artistic inspiration for their creations.
Sean Tseng graduated from the Royal College of Art with a master's degree in Sculpture. He creates his art pieces interchangeably using industrial materials and natural materials. Having been exhibited in Taiwan, Spain, and the United Kingdom many times, his works are known for combining installations, images, and objects. He was the recipient of the S-An Cultural Foundation Art Award in 2019, Next Art Tainan Award in 2020, and Taipei Art Awards in 2021.
According to the TECO in Spain, Mallorca is one of the most important contemporary art strongholds in Spain. There are hundreds of international galleries, museums, and art galleries on the island. Artistic and cultural activities and creative exchanges frequently take place. CCA Andratx is an important cultural facility on the island, having a close connection with local contemporary art venues. This is the first time that Taiwan has collaborated with CCA Andratx, and it is hoped that, through the residency program, the visibility of Taiwanese contemporary art will be increased.
