The Taiwan Film Festival Berlin (TFFB) 2023 is open from Sept. 29 to Oct. 8 at the Kino Central, screening multiple award-winning films exploring the concept of "home". Organized jointly by the Ministry of Culture, the Cultural Division of the Taipei Representative Office in Germany, and Impression Taiwan e.V. (映像臺灣協會), the TFFB aims to show the diversity of Taiwanese culture to the German audience through films.
"Home, Whenever" is the theme of the Taiwan Film Festival Berlin 2023. The collection includes 5 feature films, namely "Gaga (哈勇家)", "Missing Johnny (強尼·凱克)", "The Sunny Side of the Street (白日青春)", "Coo-Coo 043 (一家子兒咕咕叫)", and "Day Off (本日公休)"; 2 documentaries, namely "The Silent Teacher (那個靜默的陽光午後)", and "LOVE Talk (幸福定格)"; and an animated film "On Happiness Road (幸福路上)". By delivering stories of Taiwanese families in different dynamics, the festival invites more imagination and possibilities about what a "home" could be.
Impression Taiwan e.V., the curation team, expressed that "home" is an important issue in contemporary social structure, and this film festival tries to shatter the stereotypical notion of “family” which is usually full of warmth. To do so, they specially selected films that tell stories about intense relationships, ambiguous affection, and a sense of disconnection.
Besides film screenings, two expert talks are set up to further discuss issues of identity revolving around Taiwanese people living in Europe. In addition, to introduce Taiwanese cuisine, local snacks as well as desserts will be served at the closing party. The participating audience will also have a chance to win Taipei-Munich flight tickets in the lucky draw.
