Co-organized by the Taipei Representative Office (TRO) in Italy and Rome Tre University, “The Inspired Island III” (他們在島嶼寫作系列III ) series event will run from Oct. 23 to Nov. 11, showcasing Taiwanese literature through documentary screenings, translation workshops, and seminars with renowned writer Chu Tien-hsin (朱天心).

Commemorating the 100th anniversary of Italian writer Italo Calvino’s birth, this is the third time the Cultural Division of the TRO in Italy and the Department of Foreign Languages of Rome Tre University have collaborated to promote literary exchanges.

The Cultural Division pointed out that 14 television series have been translated into Italian in two years under their translation project, along with the accompanying 14 screening events, connecting Italian audiences with Taiwanese literature. In conjunction with the publishing of Chu Tien-hsin’s work in Italian in April, she was invited to the event this year to boost the international exposure of Taiwanese literature, they added.

“The Inspired Island” is a series of literary documentaries produced by the Fisfisa Media (目宿媒體). Its third edition consists of “Unfulfilled Dreams (願未央)” and” I Remember (我記得),” directed by Chu Tien-wen (朱天文) and Lin Chun-ying (林俊頴) respectively. They both illustrate the Chu family of writers and their literary careers while showing the development of Taiwanese literature from the 1950s and beyond in the background.

“The Inspired Island III” will take place at the Rome Tre University from Oct. 23 to Oct. 30, displaying two screening events and two translation workshops led by professor Rosa Lombardi. In addition, Chu Tien-hsin will be present at the campus on Nov. 9 and 10 to share the latest developments in Taiwanese contemporary literature.
