Spanish dance festival to feature Taiwanese dance segment

Collaborating with the Stray Birds Dance Platform (漂鳥舞蹈平台), the MASDANZA International Contemporary Dance Festival of the Canary Islands in Spain will feature five outstanding dance performances from Taiwan in the MASDANZA Taiwan segment on Oct. 28.

The five performances selected by Natalia Medina to perform in the festival are "Birdy (羽人)" and "Formless Erosion (嶙峋)" by Lai Hung-chung (賴翃中), "Flow (流)" by Kuo Chueh-kai (郭爵愷), "The Body That Does Not Exist (不存在的身體)" by Lin Ting-syu (林廷緒), and "Somewhere Over the Rainbow (很久以前的那天)" by Chen Ting-yu (陳婷渝) and Chiu Po-sheng (邱柏盛).

The Stray Birds Dance Platform is a project launched by Taiwanese contemporary dance troupe Hung Dance (翃舞製作) since 2018. Its mission is to connect emerging choreographers to international dance competitions and festivals.

Lai Hung-chung, the director of Hung Dance, said that MASDANZA proactively invited the platform to jointly present the MASDANZA Taiwan segment, marking a new milestone for their partnership while showing that Taiwan’s contemporary dance scene is going strong.

The Cultural Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Spain mentioned that Hung Dance and MASDANZA have been building a solid foundation for long-term collaboration. They also said that MASDANZA’s decision to include a special segment on Taiwan is a great recognition of Taiwan’s dance industry.

Founded by distinguished dancer and choreographer Natalia Medina in 1996, MASDANZA is committed to elevating world dance by gathering world-class artistic directors, curators, choreographers, and dancers from around the globe through competitions and performances. Nominated for the Best European Dance Festival Award in 2019, it is one of the most influential dance festivals internationally.
