Touring exhibition on Taiwanese literature kicks off in Prague

Organized by the National Museum of Taiwan Literature (NMTL), “On the Road to Freedom – A Special Exhibition on Taiwanese Literature” is now open at the Museum of Czech Literature in Prague. Supported by the Ministry of Culture under the Taiwan Brand Campaign (風潮計畫), this exhibition will also tour in Slovakia and Hungary, showing the different faces of Taiwanese literature to European audiences through various themes such as culture, history, human rights, ecology, gender, and indigeneity.

In the inaugural ceremony on Oct. 26, Representative Ke Liang-ruey (柯良叡) of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Czech Republic said that Taiwanese literature has its own specific motifs and styles due to Taiwan’s unique geography and history. He looks forward to the literary exchange between Taiwan and the Czech Republic, he added, hoping that Czech readers could have a deeper understanding of Taiwan’s culture.

Director Nikky Lin (林巾力) of NMTL mentioned that this tour in Europe is built on the collaboration with the Czech partners. She thanked the director of the Museum of Czech Literature, Zdeněk Freisleben, who participated in the 20th anniversary of NMTL in Taiwan on Oct. 16 and consequently signed several memorandums of understanding, promising a long-term partnership. She also noted that a Czech literature exhibition will be held at the end of 2024 in Taiwan, showcasing a complete catalog of Czech literature to Taiwanese audience.

“On the Road to Freedom” is on display now at the Museum of Czech Literature in Prague until Nov. 14. The exhibition will also be staged at other venues including the University of Pardubice in the Czech Republic, the Comenius University in Bratislava as well as the University of Presov in Slovakia, and the Eotvos Lorand University in Hungary on selected dates.
