Taiwan-themed festival to kick off in Madrid with dance, jazz

In the fourth edition of "Made in Taiwan: Taiwan en el Circulo,” an annual Taiwan-themed festival in Madrid, three groups from Taiwan will showcase flower arrangement, contemporary dance, and innovative jazz at a renowned Spanish cultural venue from Oct. 23 through 26.

Circulo de Bellas Artes has a long-running partnership with the Ministry of Culture through the Rainbow Initiative for cross-sector collaboration. The venue collects cinematic and historic relics, and also organizes events such as theater plays, exhibitions, and ticketed performances.

In its fourth year of collaboration with the Ministry, Circulo de Bellas Artes will host two flower arrangement workshops by the Taipei-based Chinese Floral Arts Foundation (中華花藝協會) on Oct. 23 and 24, the Madrid debut of a new dance piece by T.T.C. Dance (張婷婷獨立製作) on Oct. 25, and a night of jazzy repertoire by Yuhan Su Quintet (蘇郁涵) on Oct. 26.

As one of five Taiwanese performance groups selected to perform at the 2013 Festival OFF d'Avignon in France, T.T.C. Dance emphasizes the root basics of the dance art - they take the human body as their foundation, combining Eastern and Western concepts of bodily aesthetics and modern dance.

The Taipei-based troupe will debut "Persistence of Memory (時空抽屜),” a convergence of dance and painting examining Salvador Dali's drawers and Sigmund Freud's unconscious mind on Oct. 25. The breathtaking interaction of body movement with 3D imagery took home the Grand Award at the 2016 McCallum Theatre Choreography Festival in Palm Desert, California.

Yushan Su Quintet is led by vibraphonist Yuhan Su, a Golden Melody nominee for Best Composer and Best Instrumental Album. The eponymous quintet is widely hailed for its lyricism and emotional resonance, and audiences should brace for "intelligence, sensitivity, and a haunting sense of tenderness” at the contemporary jazz concert in Madrid on Oct. 26.
