Musee Guimet to co-host Taiwan cultural program

An event series featuring Taiwanese films, literature, and music will kick off at Musee Guimet in Paris on Nov. 2 to spotlight Taiwan culture.

The collaborative program co-organized by the Taiwan Cultural Center in Paris and Musee Guimet will present 17 films, two music concerts, and five forums.

Starting on Nov. 2, a film series featuring French director Jean-Robert Thomann will showcase four of his documentaries about Taiwan's diverse culture. The lineup includes the French premiere of "Petite histoire à la porte de l'ouest,” Thomann's first feature that is filmed in Taipei's Ximending District.

On Nov. 5, two documentaries - "Civil Disobedience (公民不服從)” by Chen Yu-ching (陳育青) and "The Lost Sea (刪海經)” by Hung Chun-hsiu (洪淳修) - will be screened at Musee Guimet to discuss the social and environmental issues of Taiwan.

Next up are the French premieres of three documentaries on Taiwan literature, including "Towards the Completion of a Poem (朝向一首詩的完成)” on poet Yang Mu (楊牧), "Home in Two Cities (兩地)” on writer Lin Hai-yin (林海音), and "The Man Behind the Book (尋找背海的人)” on novelist Wang Wen-xing (王文興).

A forum will be held prior to the documentary premieres on Nov. 16, featuring professor Sandrine Marchand from Artois University who will present a speech on Taiwan literature.

Screenings of feature films will begin on Nov. 18, encompassing films by notable Taiwanese directors such as Chang Tso-chi (張作驥), Leon Dai (戴立忍), Chienn Hsiang (錢翔), Hou Hsiao-hsien (侯孝賢), Chung Mong-hong (鍾孟宏), Edward Yang (楊德昌), Ko I-chen (柯一正), and Chang Yi (張毅).

"Jade Miners (挖玉石的人),” a documentary by Midi Z (趙德胤), will be showcased next year on Jan. 13 to coincide with "Jade, From Emperors to Art Deco,” an exclusive jade art exhibition hosted by Musee Guimet.

The program also includes two music concerts. Ka Dao Yin (卡到音即興樂團), a Taipei-based improvisation ensemble, will stage "Crossroads of Sounds” on Nov. 25 while yangqin player Wang Ya-ping (王雅平) will perform "Gift of Jade” on Dec. 9.

Next year on Jan. 17, forums on Taiwanese topics will be hosted by Taiwan-France Cultural Award winner Samia Ferhat. Four scholars will be invited to deliver keynote speeches on the economy, culture, history, and sports of Taiwan.
