Renowned marionette troupe Puppet & Its Double Theater (無獨有偶) is slated to meet Spanish theatergoers through a Madrid workshop and live performance in late November.
Established in 1999, the Puppet & Its Double Theater is a creative and prolific puppetry group that experiments with hand-, string-, and rod-maneuvered puppets as well as shadow and object theater. The puppeteers also play with disclosure, sometimes appearing on stage to perform alongside their realistic charges.
For their upcoming trip to Spain, the puppeteers plan to bring "I Am Another Yourself (我是另一個你自己)” to Circulo de Bellas Artes de Madrid. The ten-act play reflects the arbitrary nature of life, in which surprises, accidents, unexpected encounters, and departures will happen.
Prior to two performances slated for Nov. 28, troupe founder and artistic director Cheng Chia-yin (鄭嘉音) will offer a group workshop on Nov. 26, in which participants will undergo the same training as troupe members, taking inspiration from old newspapers and imbuing puppets with life.
Puppet & Its Double Theater will be the second Taiwanese group to visit Circulo de Bellas Artes de Madrid this November, following jazz ensemble Sizhukong (絲竹空爵士樂團) on Nov. 19 and 20.
The two groups were invited by the Ministry of Culture and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Madrid to perform in Spain as part of the "Made in Taiwan II” program under the Spotlight Taiwan project.
The Puppet & Its Double Theater will continue onto Poland after the Nov. 28 performances.
