Taiwanese writers Walis Norgan (瓦歷斯‧諾幹) and Liao Mei-hsuan (廖梅璇) will hold five literary forums across France from Nov. 22 through Dec. 2 to promote the French editions of their poetry and prose collections.
Walis, 54, is an indigenous writer who established the Hunter Culture Magazine (獵人文化) and the Taiwan Indigenous People Culture and Humanity Research Center (台灣原住民人文研究中心). The Atayal writer has won numerous literary awards for his poetry, critique, and prose.
Liao, 37,is one of the most representative writers of her generation. She is known for using supernatural elements to underscore mundane and ordinary human suffering, and her prose is characterized by a penchant for twisted endings.
Starting this year, the Taiwan Cultural Center in Paris began to support the translation and publication of Taiwanese literature in France. To boost the visibility of such publications, the Center collaborates regularly with La Maison de la poésie de Nantes, an organization that promotes contemporary Asian poetry and literature in France, to host Taiwan-themed literary forums.
Walis and Liao will meet withFrench readers in Paris, Nante, Ivry, Tinqueux, and Rennes. Each forum will also be moderated by a Chinese-French translator, Camille Loivier or Gwennaël Gaffric, to help audiences understand the structures and subtlety of Chinese-language poems.
Loivier and Gaffric have jointly released several French editions of Taiwanese literature, including the collections "La montagne rêve (mountains have dreams, 山有夢)” by Walis and "Dialogue des oreilles (dialogue between the ears, 雙耳的對話)” by Liao, through French journal Neige d'août.
