The Chelsea College of Arts will be presenting an art installation by collaborating artists Tsai Hsiao-chi (蔡筱淇) and Kimiya Yoshikawa (吉川公野) this September at the London Design Festival.
"Tsai & Yoshikawa Figure No.1” is a work based on the historical 'Reclining Figure No.1 1959'that once stood at theHenry Moore Courtyard of Chelsea. Created to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Chelsea College of Art's relocation to the neighborhood of Tate Britain, the new piece of site-specific art will be displayed from Sept. 19 through Oct. 19.
Both artists received their BA degrees from the Chelsea College of Arts and MA degrees from the Royal College of Arts in London. Tsai is an expert in using color, pattern, and form with everyday materials whereas Kimiya specializes in sculpture and installation.
The London-based duo began their first collaboration in 2007 when they were commissioned to create a large-scale window display for the Harvey Nichols flagship store in London's Knightsbridge district. Their design "Futuristic Flowers” received wide acclamation, including praise from Vogue, Dezeen, and Crafts Magazine.
After rising to prominence, the duo has undertaken numerous projects and exhibitions. In 2009, their first piece of public art, "The Lion,” was installed at the entry of Chinatown in London. The sculptural interpretation of traditional Chinese symbols from the duo's perspective earned them the Marsh Award for Excellence in Public Sculpture that same year.
Their specialties in producing artworks with bold color and modern materials work excellently together. While developing their personal art projects, the duo continue to collaborate in creating diverse artworks to present their aesthetics to the world.
