U-Theatre (優人神鼓), a Taiwanese troupe renowned for combining Taoism with performance arts, will bring their 2011 classic "Beyond Time (時間之外)” to Paris this September.
After an 11-year absence from France, U-Theatre will be presenting 5 days at Théâtre du Châtelet from Sept. 14 to 18. The troupe had made their first appearance in Paris at the 2004 Periph Summer Festival.
"Beyond Time” is a work that combines drumming and traditional martial arts with modern technology and contemporary choreography. The performance presents a dynamic and spiritual movement that offers an extraordinary insight into Taiwanese culture.
The work expresses an epiphany of life, using a four-dimensional space to present a comparison between substance and the void. It is creator's interpretation of time and space. The troupe intends to lead audience into a timeless journey, using drum sounds and dance movement to evoke soul-searching.
Artistic director Liu Ruo-yu (劉若瑀) notes that the piece will embody Eastern cultural strength through five segments: "Pouring Rain (大驟雨),” "Reflection of Moon on River (千江映月),” "Out of the Void (涉空而來),” "Vortex (旋中渦),” and "Beyond Time (時間之外).”
