Taiwan Pavilion at 17th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice opens on May 22

The Taiwan Pavilion at the 17th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice, Italy, is set to run from May 22 to Nov. 21. To visit the exhibition, pre-registration in advance is required, in line with the pandemic prevention measures of the Italian government, the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts (NTMoFA) announced.
Revolving around the theme "Primitive Migration from/to Taiwan," the Taiwan Pavilion at the Palazzo delle Prigioni in Venice, was jointly organized and curated by the NTMoFA, Divooe Zein Architects (自然洋行建築事務所), and Double-Grass International Co. (草字頭國際).

NTMoFA stated that the architectural philosophy of the team responsible for planning, Divooe Zein Architects, has always emphasized the coexistence of the people and the environment, and has also developed a perspective of achieving harmony between an architecture and its surroundings.

The five architectural projects exhibited this year include "Lab of Primitive Senses," "Nature Monastery," "The Forest BIG," "Semi-Ecosphere Glass House," and "Lab of Primitive Perception," all seeking to explore thoughts on architecture and the visions in light of the interaction between humans and nature, while drawing inspirations from Taiwan’s local environment.

NTMoFA Director Liang Yung-fei (梁永斐) noted that Taiwan's team overcame many difficulties during the process of setting up the exhibition, and the endeavor reflects the overarching theme of the biennale "How will we live together?"

NTMoFA pointed out that the Taiwan Pavilion is set up at the Palazzo delle Prigioni at the transportation hub of Venice, a tourist attraction which was a prison in ancient times.

The serene and ancient setting of the pavilion echoes the relationship between people and space at a time of pandemic rampage, when people, in an isolated situation, may tend to make self-reflecting and self-examining and review the interrelation between people and the living environment, NTMoFA added.
The 17th International Architecture Exhibition will comply with the Italian government’s COVID-19 prevention measures, and tickets need to be booked in advance.

NTMoFA stated that during the exhibition, NTMoFA and the participating teams will promote the exhibition’s information online, and, it is expected that through digital marketing, the Taiwan Pavilion will be seen globally.
