Supported by the Ministry of Culture, the Mercat de les Flors in Barcelona, Spain, will present a Panorama Taiwan program on Feb. 17 and 18. It will feature Taiwanese dance companies Shimmering Production (微光製造) and B.DANCE (丞舞製作) to showcase their contemporary dance pieces, respectively, “Beings (捺撇)” and “Floating Flowers (浮花).”

As Spain’s important performing arts center, the Mercat de les Flors has been established for over 30 years. It is the premier dance house in Southern Europe. In 2019, the Mercat de les Flors and the National Theater & Concert Hall initiated the Panorama Taiwan, an artistic residency exchange program.

Shimmering Production was founded in 2019 by Wang Yeu-Kwn (王宇光) and Lee Yin-ying (李尹櫻). Their dance piece “Beings” explores the bonds between the two supporting calligraphy strokes, between the two intimately linked performers, between the rice paper and the ink. It profoundly connects its two performers in a stirring duet that culminates in an unexpected twist.

B.DANCE was founded in 2014 by choreographer and artistic director Tsai Po-cheng (蔡博丞). Their choreography “Floating Flowers” is inspired by a traditional Taiwanese religious celebration that takes place at the Ghost Festival. By combining traditional Asian movements and martial arts with contemporary dance, B.DANCE offers a theatrical, physical, and emotional performance.
