Taiwanese film director retrospective to take place in Berlin

The Cultural Division of the Taipei Representative Office in Germany, in collaboration with the Taiwan Association in Germany’s Berlin (Taiwan Verein in Deutschland e.V., Bezirk Berlin), is launching a retrospective exhibition titled “Taipei Stories: The Films of Edward Yang” at the Deutsches Historisches Museum, Germany’s national historical museum. The event is set to take place from Oct. 25 through Dec. 3.

Late film director Edward Yang (楊德昌) was a prominent figure in the Taiwan New Cinema movement of the 1980s. Known for his unique urban perspective and his keen observation of society, the director made tremendous impact on Taiwanese cinema with his films.

The retrospective will feature Yang’s films throughout his career, from his early TV film work “Floating Weeds (浮萍)”, to the key Taiwan New Cinema film “In Our Time (光陰的故事)”, as well as “Mahjong (麻將)” and “A Confucian Confusion (獨立時代)”. His most famous film “Yi Yi (一一)”, with which he won the Best Director Award at the 53rd Cannes Film Festival, will also be featured at the exhibition.
