Works of two Taiwanese artists, Chou Tung-yen (周東彥) and Hsieh Wen-yee (謝文毅), have been selected for this year’s Geneva International Film Festival (GIFF), which will take place from Nov. 1 to Nov. 10.

Supported by the Ministry of Culture (MOC) and the Taiwan Cultural Center (TCC) in Paris, Chou’s “Free UR Head (放開你的頭腦)” is set to be performed as a part of the GIFF’s highlights program from Nov. 7 to Nov. 10. Audiences will be able to interact with the performer in real time through their VR headsets, breaking the boundary between the viewer and the dancer.

Chou has been featured at various international film festivals this year, including the Venice Film Festival, where “Free UR Head” was also presented, and the NewImages Festival in Paris, where his work “Traversing the Mist (穿越霧中)” won the Grand Jury Prize.

Meanwhile, Hsieh’s “Limbophobia (暗面)” is set to compete for the Reflet d’Or Best Immersive Work award at GIFF. Offering viewers a freefall-like experience by seeing cities crumbling, “Limbophobia” inspires the audience to reflect on the way they see the world and sharpen their insight.

Hsieh, who has a background in architecture, utilizes image structure and spatial tension to create a unique architectural touch to his artworks. His first-ever VR piece “Limbotopia (彼岸)” has been selected for the Tribeca Film Festival in New York as a part of the Tribeca Immersive program, and it won the Best VR Film award at Anifilm 2022 in the Czech Republic.

Hu Ching-fang (胡晴舫), director of the TCC in Paris, noted that the TCC in Paris has been collaborating with Swiss institutes to bring Taiwan to the world, including the Cinémathèque Suisse, the Théâtre Vidy-Lausanne, and the Plateforme 10.
